Northland Cancer Society

Preventing Cancer

Research from the World Health Organisation suggests that 50 – 80% of cancers are due to our environment or lifestyle and are therefore potentially preventable.

For some cancers the risk factors have been clearly identified, while for others further research is needed.  What we do know is that, based on current research, at least 30% of future cancers are preventable by action taken now.  Activities that increase awareness of cancer risk and promote reduction and early detection of cancer,  are an important role of the Northland Cancer Society

Early detection and screening

It is important to be aware of changes in your body and consult your doctor if you notice anything unusual that continues for more than a couple of weeks.  Most changes are not cancer but if cancer is present then finding it early may improve the odds of satisfactory treatment.

We would be happy to provide you with printed information on reducing your risk of getting cancer.  Alternatively, if your community group would like a representative of the Northland Cancer Society to give a presentation on early detection and screening,   please call Daffodil House on (09) 437 5593 or Freephone : 0800 366 066 to arrange a suitable time
