Cancer Trials New Zealand
In 2003 the Auckland Cancer Society provided seed funding for the establishment of a Cancer Trials Centre, located in the University of Auckland’s Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, headed by medical oncologist Professor Michael Findlay.
The main objective of Cancer Trials New Zealand (CTNZ) is to improve health and other outcomes for New Zealand by providing a national resource to facilitate clinical trials research in cancer, contributing to the New Zealand Cancer Control Strategy’s commitment to improve cancer control through research.
CTNZ assists clinical researchers, scientists and existing cancer research units, by providing an infrastructure to facilitate both development and central co-ordination of new cancer clinical trial ideas.
The primary focus of the group is to encourage and support Phase I and II oncology trials. CTNZ currently has studies moving through each phase – concept development, protocol development and implementation.
The group is also exploring the feasibility and use of rare tumour registries, pathology repositories, and national clinical databases, as well as strengthening links with international co-operative trials groups to expand and collaborate on promising ideas.
