The Auckland Cancer Society has been at the forefront of the fight against cancer for over 75 years
1929
The Cancer Society was formed in 1929 as the New Zealand Branch of the Empire Cancer Campaign and in 1963 became the Cancer Society of New Zealand Incorporated. During its early years the Society started clinics to give advice to people who thought they had cancer.
Early research laboratories set up by the Society focused on the use of radium and other substances to treat cancer. The Society also raised funds to help purchase radiotherapy equipment for hospitals.
1968
The Auckland Division obtained its own headquarters at 41 Gillies Avenue.
1970
The Cancer Detection Centre was established at the Society’s Gillies Avenue headquarters
1972
A volunteer group known as the Cancer Auxiliary was formed to provide help for cancer patients and their families
1973
The Cancer Society of New Zealand, with the Heart Foundation successfully petitioned Government for a health warning to be printed on every packet of cigarettes sold in New Zealand
1975
The Mastectomy Association started, now known as the Breast Cancer Support Service.
1978
Domain Lodge motel was purchased to provide accommodation for patients living outside of Auckland who were undergoing treatment at Auckland Hospitals
1980
National campaign launched on television to promote skin cancer “Smart Cookies don’t Burn”
1981
Breast self-examination campaign was launched. The Auckland Division extended its services to Northland
1982
The National Cancer Education Committee was formed to oversee cancer education on a national level.
1982
The anti-leukaemia drug developed by the Cancer Research Laboratory underwent successful testing in the USA and was marketed world-wide under the name “amsacrine”. This was the first cancer research laboratory in the Southern Hemisphere to have discovered and developed a drug for clinical use.
1983
The “Slip Slop Slap” skin cancer prevention campaign was launched
1986
The Volunteer Meal Service started
1991
The Cancer Information Service was established and the first Daffodil Day fundraising event was held
1992
Daffodil House cancer centre was established in Whangarei
1998
A joint management board with the University of Auckland was established to manage the Auckland Cancer Society Research Centre
1999
The redeveloped, purpose-built Domain Lodge was opened
2000
Psychosocial Services was established to provide professional counselling to patients, families and support groups
2003
First Relay for Life fundraising event held
2004
The Cancer Society of New Zealand celebrates 75 years of service to the community
